Blizzard Sued by Chinese Firm Over World of Warcraft Fonts

In a story that can only be labeled "ironic", Chinese font developer Founder Electronics has announced that it is suing Blizzard over alleged use of its fonts in World of Warcraft. The lawsuit, which was filed at Beijing's Municipal Higher People's Court, seeks damages in the amount of 100 million yuan ($13.17 million).

The case appears to relate to five Chinese-language fonts owned by Founder Electronics used in the game. Founder Electronics is one of China's oldest computer companies, and is a major developer of Chinese fonts.

Typical among many MMORPG games and the addiction shown by Asian gamers, Chinese players account for more than 40% of the game's over 9 million players. Although this story is definitely ironic, it's also clear that since joining the WTO in 2001, Chinese firms have been much more concerned with intellectual property rights - at least in one direction.
