"New" Hard Drive Contained Democratic Party Data

Somehow I think there's going to be negative feedback for this eBay seller - as well as negative feedback for the Arkansas Democratic Party employee who let this drive go without wiping it.

In June a California resident bought a "new" hard drive on eBay. Turns out it was hardly new. “I was a bit upset,” said the buyer, Bill Ries-Knight, an IT technician. “But it is not the first time I have experienced this, nor, do I expect, will be the last.”

It's not the first time he's bought a "new" hard drive that was really used? Considering he paid $69 for the drive, which is actually a little overpriced for a 120GB hard drive, I don't even know why he was buying from eBay. You can find cheaper prices at reputable retailers.

Anyway, it turns out the hard drive contained data created by high-level Democratic party officials while campaigning for Mike Beebe, who successfully won the Arkansas governorship last November. The computer the drive belonged to died, and David Qualls, an IT volunteer, was given the drive to keep after he worked on the PC.

This year, while Qualls was away in the National Guard, his wife sold the drive on eBay, believing it was new. I'm not sure how you mistake a used hard drive for new; even an OEM hard drive generally comes sealed.

At any rate, it just goes to show - encrypt the data. Or at least use something like SDelete, which I wrote about late last year, to really wipe your hard drive before giving it to someone. Oh, and do some pricing research before buying on eBay. As I said, $69 was too high anyway; he could have purchased a new hard drive from a regular Internet retailer for that price, or less.

What of interest could possibly be on the drive? The political game plan is always the same: lie, steal, and squander.

F**king dolt of an idiot who sold a drive with data on it. We are becoming a nation of technological fools. I agree with the author, I can get a 120 gig drive brand new for 59 bucks at my local Best Buy. And the buyer claims to be an IT tech ... where, at a 7 Eleven? Oh yea, the 'seller' (wife of an 'IT volunteer'?) sold it 'thinking it was new'! What? Was it in a nice OEM box and anti-static bag? This whole think sounds like something the CIA would do at a yard sale in Langley.

I know it was a good price for a new Seagate 2.5 inch notebook drive. Even as of 1 Sept, 2007. Ok even for a new retail 3.5 inch drive. .

Moving on, the anonymous writer seems to have poor self control. The seller of the drive, Mr Qualls, offered to take the drive back. Period. He was a gentleman, just did a sloppy thing, that you should learn from. I was building custom PC motherboards from discrete components in the middle 80's. I expect you can't define a NAND gate. And I forgive you for not knowing important things like Best Buy being a ripoff shop. .

Encrypt anything sensitive. Wipe a drive and check it before shipping or delivery. .

The drive was, it just so happens, sent in an opened static bag. This is something that is done because some small time sellers like to test before selling as insurance against idiots claiming DOA. Get real. It happens. I am not upset, and I fail to see why this transaction should give you a heart attack. .

I can assure you it had nothing to do with the CIA. They never once contacted me on this matter. I don't expect they will either. It is Domestic and I would worry more about the FBI. But you knew that

BIG DEAL. THE GUY'S OVER IN IRAQ SERVING HIS COUNTRY, AND YOU FUCK-UPS WANNA BITCH ABOUT HIS WIFE (UNLIKELY TECHNICALLY SAVVY) SELLING STUFF ON EBAY IN HIS ABSENCE. THE DEMOCRATS WHO GAVE HIM THE HARD DRIVE (OR THE WHOLE TOWER, OR WHATEVER) WERE THE SCREW-UPS. I PERSONALLY WOULD'VE IMMEDIATELY DELETED THE PARTITIONS ON THE HARD DISK, RE-PARTITIONED THEM AND FORMATTTED THE THING TO BE SURE THE DRIVE WAS 100% ERROR-FREE, BUT THAT'S ME.

$69 is not too high for a 120GB NEW laptop hard drive. There is a shortage right now in the industry - check around - the cheapest price you'll find for a NEW 120GB 2.5" Laptop hard Drive is 69.99.
