gPhone Becomes "Android," Google to Unveil "Open Handset Alliance"

Speculation has been running high for months that Google was going to produce either a mobile phone or a mobile phone OS. According to sources, Google is set to unveil its so-called gPhone platform, now code-named "Android," at a press conference on Monday. "Android" will be based on open-source Linux software.

Additionally, Google and a who's-who of mobile communications companies are set to form an organization called the Open Handset Alliance. Some of the members of the alliance will include NTT Docomo, KDDI, Motorola, Qualcomm, Broadcom, HTC, Intel, Samsung, Sprint, and Texas Instruments.

Absent from the alliance appears to be Nokia, but as Nokia owns nearly 50% of British software company Symbian --- which makes the OS used on Nokia phones, and others --- this makes sense.

Don't expect a gPhone soon. Deals will still have to be made, with carriers, manufacturers, and perhaps ... even Google buying its own share of the wireless spectrum during the FCC's January 700 Mhz auction.
