T-Mobile Responds to German Court: Eat Our $1500 Unlocked iPhones

You'll recall that just yesterday I wrote about this particular court case, in which Vodafone managed to get an injunction against T-Mobile, charging that T-Mobile violated German law by selling the iPhone with a SIM lock and two-year contract. Well, be careful what you wish for.

T-Mobile has confirmed that in response to this, it will sell the first officially unlocked iPhones anywhere. But it will sell them for €999, which amounts to $1477.02 at the time of this writing. Compare that to €399 or $589.92 with a two-year contract. As exhorbitant as this may sound, this actually matches the rumored price for the unlocked Orange phone which will start selling in France at the end of this month.

So, this obviously what we wanted, or expected --- OK, maybe we expected it. It's kind of a "don't like the way we do things? Eat this!" response. Oh, and T-Mobile is expected to appeal the injunction anyway in two weeks.

iPhone Dev Team, don't go anywhere; we obviously still need your unlocking services.
