Tired of Your Car Color? Change it with the Push of a Button

Although this sounds interesting, it would be nice to see auto manufacturers emphasizing technology that oh, say, reduced emissions (ahem) or increased mileage. Still, Nissan has developed what it calls a "paramagnetic" paint coating.

When current is applied, spacing between the iron oxide crystals embedded in the polymer changes and different colors appear to the human eye. Without the current, the car returns to a default color --- white. This could prove to be a problem if this technology becomes popular and you need to find your say, now-white Nissan Altima in a sea of white cars after a movie.

Nissan hopes to roll out the technology in 2010.

A nice, but once again, superficial change to automobiles. But since you trail your arch-rival Toyota so badly Nissan, shouldn't you be working in that arena? Nissan also created another superficial paint tech with the self-healing "Scratch Guard Coat" which is available on the 2008 Infiniti EX35 luxury crossover utility vehicle.

Calling all cars, calling all cars. Be on the lookout for a blue. No make that a red. Umm green four door sedan fleeing a robbery and making its way down Twelfth Street. Oh great, just what bad guys like bank robbers and child kidnappers need. A car that can change colors, then be hard to impossible to keep track of during a search or chase. What, the manufacturers didn't think of that?

Let me applaud the commentary above, and then introduce a curious question - if the car only changes colour to the human eye, what about security cameras and the like?

Anonymous posed a very interesting question.

As for Doh, The opposition has all the advantage these days. Homeland security, warrantless wiretapping, etc... I think it's great that a car company is coming out with a vehicle that can change color. We (the people) are going to need all the advantages we can get in the years to come

ok... what it means to the human eyes is that whenever you are looking at an object (lets say a red object) in reality is any other color except red, because that object will absorb all other colors but it will reflect red, so YES the cameras will record it as whatever color you have on. Because by changing material properties you are also changing the color of that material and the color that it reflects, a camera records any light that is directed to its lens. Nissan isnt tricking your brain into thinking this car is a different color, its actualy changing the color of the car.
