Trend Micro Launches Web Security for PS3

Yep, not only did the PlayStation 3 get a firmware upgrade today (to 2.0), part of that upgrade includes what Trend Micro says is the first product of its kind for a gaming console.

Trend Micro Web Security for the PS3, free until April 2008 (later pricing TBD), blocks malicious sites when using the PS3 web browser. According to Trend Micro, the service uses a database of malicious sites as well as what they call, Web Reputation Technology, which is "a technology that checks a Web site for risk of fraud, based on its registration and change history, and blocks the site if it is deemed to be malicious."

Additional changes / features in the 2.0 firmware upgrade are:

  • Remote Start: lets users remotely start their PS3
  • Personalized playlists in both the music and photo sections.
  • Customization of the XMB (XrossMediaBar) menu screen
According to their Trend Micro's FAQ, you can't edit the list of blocked sites, or the list of site types that are blocked. So it's all or nothing.

To start the service, start the "Internet Browser" and select [Tools] -> [Browser Security] -> [Stop "Trend Micro Web Security for PS3™"].
