Microsoft Launches Red Zune, New Zune Originals Artwork

In anticipation of Valentine's Day, and likely in anticipation of Steve Jobs' keynote at Macworld, Microsoft Tuesday announced a red version of the 80 GB Zune. At the same time new limited-time only artwork was unveiled at Zune Originals.

The 80 GB Zune was, surprisingly, in short supply after its introduction, and Microsoft is taking that as a cue.

As you know from my prior story on Zune Originals, Microsoft goes Apple one better by engraving up to five lines of text on the back of your Zune, or some seriously cool artwork. With this announcement (press release) they are obviously betting you'll think the artwork and red color will impress your loved one on Feb. 14th.

Of course, it's not going to make a dent in the market share deficit, is it? But, on the other hand, with Amazon MP3 the new (at least for myself and those I know) "in place" with DRM-free music downloads from all the major labels, who needs an iPod (yeah, yeah, I know: the iPod user interface is superior).

Microsoft also indicated specials will be listed at http://www.zune.net/valentines.

Edging closer to similarities with iPod! So (knock on wood)when are the skin zapping complaints coming, complaints of easily scratchable screens, etc.?
