ModBook Tablet Macintosh Finally Ships
Nearly a year after Axiotron announced the ModBook at Macworld Expo in 2007, it has shipped.
The ModBook is an aftermarket modification to a standard MacBook (hence the name). If you want a tablet PC, it's really nicely set up, with a case built from aircraft-grade magnesium alloy. The top shell also gets chrome plating over nickel and copper layers, supposedly scratch-resistant.
The screen and the iSight webcam get a protective (and replaceable) chemically-strengthened screen cover made of what Axiotron calls "ForceGlass." The screen also has 512 pressure levels, double what Axiotron originally announced.
According to the site, Axiotron worked with WACOM to design the pen input system. In case you are confused by the site, though, at the time of this writing that page implies the system will ship with Tiger, which isn't true. Orders will ship with MacOS X 10.5 Leopard.
The guts of the ModBook, meaning the CPU, etc. are unchanged from the MacBook they are based on. You'll get a 2.0 or 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, Intel GMA X3100 integrated graphics, 802.11n, Bluetooth 2.0, 24x DVD/CD-R "Combo" drive or 8x "SuperDrive, and support for up to 4GB RAM.
It also comes with GPS.
Pricing is $2,279 or $2,479, but the site currently says new orders will ship on or before 1/22.
One thing to keep in mind: Macworld Expo 2008. Will Apple announce a move into the market on January 15th? Might be a good idea to wait until after that date before ordering one of these.
