Porn Gets a Set-Top Box

First of all, with CES and the Adult Entertainment Expo in the same town (the AEE opened Wednesday), you know people have to wander over to check it out. But besides that you had to know someone had to come up with a set-top box for porn someday.

The company is called FyreTV, and with their set-top box and a broadband connection, you can get all the streaming porn you want. Think of it as Vudu for the adult film industry. Of course, unlike Vudu, the box has no storage at all, so there's no buying of content.

You get streaming, er, porn, delivered at 1.5 MB/sec (full DVD quality), 1.1 MB/sec, or 700 Kbps, depending on how fast your broadband connection is. You can choose between aspect ratios of 4:3 or 16:9. The box comes with HDMI, S-Video, component, and composite outputs. Of course, you can also bet there's DRM so you can't make permanent copies.

Price: the box is free. The money is made on a pay-as-you-go basis. As the site says:

FyreTV only charges you for the programming you watch. Spend as much time as you want searching for movies or navigating through scene selections. Your time is not logged during fast forwarding, rewinding, or menu browsing.

And you read that right, despite the fact it's streaming you can still fast-forward and rewind.

They've got their own search engine, so if you want, er, particular types of action, you can find it:

FyreTV operates with a proprietary search engine that enables you to find programming using a variety of search terms and categories, such as titles, performers, scene types, or even specific performer characteristics.

It's hard to figure out just how much it will cost, though. It starts at $10 but it's not really outlined on their site how it scales. There is a free beta you can sign up for on their site; the service doesn't go live until April.

However, with all the downloadable porn on the Internet (granted, not DVD-quality) is there a market for this? I guess we'll see in April.
