Vista SP1 Prerequisite Updates Causing Users Grief

Remember I told you that Microsoft said that in order to get Windows Vista SP1 next month, you had to have certain prerequisite patches installed? While that's true, some users installing those patches haven't been too happy.

For example, to the the Windows Vista community forum and search for KB938371 (one of the two) and check out the results. You'll see posts like "Major problems with KB937287" (one of the other updates), "Multiple Failure to Install," and on and on.

Go to the TechNet forums and you'll find "Configurating updates: stage 3 of 3 stuck in endless reboot loop" and "Stage 3 of 3 - 0% then reboots."Between the two of them, both centered around reboot loops after installing the prerequisite updates, there are nearly 30K views.

Interestingly, the one titled "Stage 3 of 3 - 0% then reboots" was opened in December, when Microsoft offered a Vista SP1 release candidate to the public, but required them to download and install the prerequisite updates manually. And after all that time they still have the same issues?

In fact, on page 3 of that thread, bickabah said:

The MS support guy had me boot to my Vista CD, and run startup repair. This process had me "Restore' and after a reboot I was back into my desktop.

Apparently, so MS says ( ;-) ), my machine was restarted thinking it had downloaded an update, but really the update hadn't been downloaded. So, upon reboot, it couldn't find the update and Vista kept trying to install it endlessly.
Others said that using "Run Startup Repair" from their Vista DVD worked, but what about those whose PCs didn't come with a DVD? Many OEMs just provide a separate partition with a restore image, as opposed to a DVD. Sure, you can restore using that image, but then you'd have to reinstall everything, unlike being able to use a DVD to repair your system.

Some were able to repair their systems through the use of System Restore. However, some also had to go back more than one Restore Point.

Microsoft previously said it was holding off for six weeks to (hopefully) fix the driver issues that may prevent users from successfully installing SP1. Based on how well they've done with just the prerequisites, they'd better get cracking on those fixes.

The best MS telephone support could do for a Vista Security Update failed install was to "hide" the update so the computer would not uselessly try to install it with each shut down. It fixed the "loop" issue but my computer still does not have the update. Can I even install Vista SP1 without it? No one at MS can answer that. I was told (unofficially) the pre-loaded OEM versions of Vista were rush jobs that are no good. Is this just more finger pointing? Let me stop. I could fill pages with my personal logs of a ten month experience with Vista.

Thanks for the article!

That is why I try never to upgrade to the latest OS until SP 1 has been out for a while

I am still using XP

That's great that Microsoft was able to hide the problem update, but could someone please explain to the rest of us HOW THEY DID IT?

I've contacted Microsoft, too, but the person I talked to didn't know how to fix it without a restore point, which I don't have!

I tried to post the path the MS engineer used to hide the uninstalled update but this site won't allow it! I'll try again:
Control Panel>Security>Check for updates>View available updates>Right click on uninstalled update and choose hide update from short list.

I had trouble to so I reinstalled the update, in my case I know it insalled ok on Wed. however I had other troubles and did a restore to two days earlier and then that is when I got into trouble when it downloaded again, once I found out what update caused this I went to the security feature in the control panel and found the update there and hide it thinking it would be ok, well I still had trouble this time just the config part at shut down, so today I thought to myself it installed ok once so I went and recovered the update and it installed and now my computer is fine, so for those who hide the update try that, or if you manually downloaded it try again.
