Quickoffice Releases Excel Editing App for the iPhone

In those days of yore, when I carried a PalmOS smartphone, I used Quickoffice to be able to edit Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. So while there are already applications that allow Excel file editing (like Spreadsheet), it's nice to see Quickoffice add their own app.

MobileFiles Pro (and its freeware companion, MobileFiles) allows you to view the following file formats:

  • Images: .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .tif, .tiff, .gif and .svg
  • Microsoft Word: .doc and .docx
  • Microsoft Excel: .xls and .xlsx
  • Microsoft PowerPoint: .ppt and .pptx
  • iWork: Pages, Numbers and Keynote [iWork files can be viewed only with MobileFiles Pro]
  • Adobe Acrobat: .pdf
  • Web Pages: .htm and .html
  • Web Archive: .mht
  • Text: .txt
  • Audio: .mp3
The Pro version, for $9.99, adds Excel file editing (Office 2003 only), and Wi-Fi file transfer to and from a desktop (Mac and PC), as well as the ability to access and synchronize with Apple MobileMe accounts.

I have to admit that I dropped Quickoffice for PalmOS when I started to get too sophisticated in my spreadsheet formula use (as someone who's coded the recomputation engine for a spreadsheet before, I'm pretty familiar with spreadsheet use); after all Quickoffice only supports a subset of the functionality of Excel (what do you expect for a smartphone app?).

I'll probably still give this a try; the linkage to MobileMe interests me.
