Craigslist? Craigslust?

Cook County, Illinois Sheriff Tom Dart announced on Thursday that his office has sued Craigslist over the websites "erotic services" section, which the sheriff said facilitates prostitution.

Cook County contains one of the largest cities in the country: Chicago. However, Craiglist's erotic services directory seems to exist in all sections of the country that the site covers.

In the lawsuit, Cook County has asked for $100,000 in compensation for the man-hours spent by the county for investigation of, well, call girl (and guy) services on the site.

Dart said:

"Craigslist is the single largest source of prostitution in the nation. I could make arrests off Craigslist 24 hours a day, but to what end? I'm trying to go up the ladder.

"They've actually catered their site so it facilitates (prostitution), where you can actually and more specifically and quickly get to what you want.

"How is that different than somebody who's aggressively and actively working with a pimp to try to get the word out about the women working for him?"
It's very obvious that prostitution services are offered on the site. One only needs to look in the erotic services section of the site. Nevertheless, Craigslist spokeswoman Susan Best said:
"Misuse of Craigslist to facilitate criminal activity is unacceptable, and we continue to work diligently to prevent it. Misuse of the site is exceptionally rare compared to how much the site is used for legal purposes. Regardless, any misuse of the site is not tolerated on Craigslist.

"Craigslist is an extremely unwise choice for those intent on committing crimes since criminals inevitably leave an electronic trail to themselves. On a daily basis, we are being of direct assistance to police departments and federal authorities nationwide."
