Google Sync Adds Push Gmail Support

Earlier this year, Google launched Google Sync, which allows end users to synchronize Gmail Contacts and Google Calendar with iPhones, Windows Mobile devices, and Symbian S60 devices. On Tuesday, Google announced that Gmail support has been added to Google Sync for iPhone, iPod Touch and Windows Mobile devices (sorry, S60 users).

Of course, based on the recent series of complaints on iPhone OS 3.1, users might want to think twice before enabling this feature on their iPhones: it will definitely impact battery life. iPhone OS 3.0 or higher is required.

With the additional feature, here's how the features breakdown on Google Sync right now, at least for iPhone OS and Windows Mobile devices:

Features

Gmail sync. Get your Gmail pushed directly to your iPhone. Your inbox is always up to date no matter where you are, or what you're doing.

Synchronize your contacts. Get your Google contacts quickly and easily to your iPhone. With Sync, you can have access to your address book at anytime and place that you need it.

Get calendar alerts. Using your iPhone's native calendar, you can now access multiple Google calendars, and be alerted for upcoming appointments with sound or vibration.

Google leverages ActiveSync for this functionality, so everything you can do with Exchange Email, Calendar and Contacts can now be done with a Google Apps or Gmail account.

To get help with enabling Google Sync on your device (there's no mobile application that needs to be installed), go to the Google Sync page and select your device.
